Stafford and Cannock League of Hospital Friends – Cannock Celebration Event On Wednesday 18 July Stafford and Cannock League of Hospital Friends held their celebration event at Mim’s Mom’s in Cannock to mark 60 years of The League of Friends serving the community and also the 70th birthday of the NHS.

Everyone enjoyed afternoon tea and then a talk by local lay preacher, Jim Bullock, who spoke about his childhood, volunteering and also made special mention to Ethel Powell who gave 33 years to The Cannock League of Friends, and who sadly passed away on 13 February 2018.

There are currently 29 volunteers in the Cannock area who volunteer at the coffee bar and Friends Café in Cannock Chase Hospital.

The coffee bar is situated on Level 2 of the hospital in the assessment unit and the Friends Café is located at the Level 2 entrance. Between them they serve a range of hot and cold drinks, confectionery and meals.

In 2009 The League of Friends in Cannock joined forces with The Stafford League of Friends to form Stafford and Cannock League of Hospital Friends.

Over the last 60 years The League of Friends have provided hundreds of thousands of pounds for equipment for our local hospitals including the redecoration and minor refurbishment of the Mortuary and Viewing Room and the Summer House Renovation at Cannock Chase Hospital.

Martin Thornley, Chief Executive of Stafford and Cannock League of Hospital Friends, said “we would like to thank all of our volunteers, past and present, for their hard work and dedication over the last 60 years. They are an amazing team and have provided a great service to hospital visitors and staff, whilst raising money for projects for the hospital”.

The League of Friends are always looking for new volunteers to join the team so if you are interested please contact Liz Hill, Volunteer Co-ordinator at or contact 01785 413234.
