About Us

The original League of Hospital Friends was formed as Stafford Hospitals and Community Friends back in 1958.  Although, the name of the charity has changed over the last 50 years, the original aim of providing services for Patients and Staff of local NHS hospitals still remains.

We raise funds in a variety of ways, with the main sources of income from our busy and friendly coffee bars, situated at the heart of the hospitals in Stafford and Cannock.  We also receive generous donations from the public and during 2011, we organised several fundraising events including a Fashion Show, Concert, Dinner Dance, and raffles.

The League of Hospital Friends also provides supported housing for those with enduring mental illness.  This unique project started in 1976 and from small foundations has now expanded to support over 40 people.  This service aims to support tenants to move into independent accommodation in a positive and structured way.

In 2010 the League of Hospital Friends officially changed its name to include Cannock to reflect the additional services which had commenced in 2009.  Our dedicated volunteers now run a Coffee Bar and Ward Trolley Service at Cannock Chase Hospital.  We currently have over 50 Volunteers aged between 18 to 85 who willingly give their time to help us achieve our aims. Without their continued dedicated support we would not be able to run our services which provide much needed services to patients, staff and visitors.

Recent Developments

In April 2012 the League of Hospital Friends took over the lease, formerly occupied by Subway on the 2nd Floor at Cannock Chase Hospital, now known as "Friends' Cafe" that provides hot and cold food and drink to eat in or take away for patients, visitors and staff.

In the Autumn of 2012 the League of Hospital Friends opened a coffee bar at the new psyciatric hospital in Shrewsbury known as 'The Redwood Centre'.  The aim was to establish the service and then transfer it to a local voluntary organisation.  In August 2014 the League of Friends successfully transferred the coffee bar to MIND Shrewsbury.
